Nosh with Nina: Super Smoothie

Although my kids have started school again, summer is still very much with us. It’s great to have a fun, refreshing recipe on hand to satisfy snack urges for kids, teenagers and adults. Better yet, add nutritional value and there’s no hesitation for anyone to indulge. That’s why I’d like to share a smoothie recipe this week.

Smoothies have become extremely popular. Typically, we stop for a reinvigorating cup full of cool, fruity nutrition when we’re out and about working or shopping. They’re convenient and delicious, but can be pricey when purchased from a vendor. The other potential disadvantage to purchasing commercially prepared smoothies is the ingredient list. There are many which contain high levels of fat and are calorically equivalent to old-fashioned milkshakes.

So, when possible, why not consider preparing your own smoothie at home? You’ll have complete control of the quality and quantity of ingredients. Pull out that blender! It’s so much fun for the kids to help, and then you can all enjoy a cool, yummy, vitamin packed treat together.

Super Smoothie

1 c. (12 oz) fresh or frozen raspberries

1 c. fresh or frozen peaches

1 container (6oz.) of flavored yogurt (either low-fat or nonfat – vanilla, strawberry, blueberry, or peach)

4-8 oz apple juice

4-8 oz. ice (Use less if preparing with frozen fruit, more if preparing with fresh.)

Process all ingredients in a blender until smooth.

Use your own discretion as to how much or how little apple juice and ice is used, depending upon desired consistency.

The quantities of some of these ingredients are contingent upon your own taste and consistency preferences. Experiment and have fun!
